Impure Blood (also: Bad Blood), 1910 A novel about the decay of a once wealthy family from the southern Serbian town of Vranje in the late 19th century. The story tells about a proud young woman forced into marriage that is supposed to improve the financial prosperity of her family, and the tragedy that ensued. Stanković is famous for his brilliant depictions of life and mentality of people in Southern Serbia - a part of Serbia in which everyday life was particularly profoundly influenced by the Ottoman culture. Protagonists of his novels are usually strong characters haunted by fits of irrational sadness, blind fury or passionate love.
