Bridge on the Drina, 1945

ivo andric writerHistory of Višegrad, a town in then Ottoman empire and in today's Bosnia, told as a history of a bridge over the Drina, the riverh separating Bosnia and Serbia. The story spans four centuries and, although centered around the bridge (still standing, erected in the late 16th century by the Ottoman Grand Vizier of Serbian origin, known as Sokolu Mehmed Pasa or Mehmed Paša Sokolović) is actually a story about the town and its mixed Serbian and Muslim population who lived there over the centuries.

The Woman From Sarajevo (Gospođica), 1945

A novel about a tragic life of a spinster who, disappointed in people and world, became obsessed with money - not earning, but saving it - thus growing into a fervent miser who managed to construct a complete life philosophy based solely on thrift. The story takes place in Sarajevo and Belgrade in the first three decades of the 20th century, and contains detailed descriptions of the social and economic changes of the time, as well as their impact on individual life.
