The exploration of the caves started in 1959, lead by D. Cvetkovic and B. Markovic, and in the period 1960 through 1962 the work was continued by D. Gavrilovic. Finally, in 1978, thanks to Dr. Radenko Lazarevic and the Valjevo speleologists’ team, caves were open to the public.

things to see

Zlotske caves is a common name for the system consisting of two caves – Lazareva and Vernikica – located in the area of Zlot, in Lazar’s canyon. This cave system has, altogether, 11 chambers: Reception, Cascade Chamber, Fairytown, Coloseum, Marble Chamber, Gothic Cathedral, Hall of Weapons, Temple of Venus and Limestone Hall.

The Lazareva Reka river flows down the Vernikica cave. This cave is geologically older than Lazar’s cave, and falls into the category of so-called dry caves. Inside you can see the Reception hall, Cascade Hall, High Channel, Fairytown and Coloseum. The average ceiling height in this cave is approx. 20 meters.

The largest cave hall in entire Serbia is Coloseum, with around 60 metres in diameter and the height of 50 meters. It owes its name to its round shape, as well as the cave decoration that can be seen in it, resembling broken pillars. Other large rocky formations that can be seen here are Godzilla (10 meters tall), Toran and Veca’s Hat (9.5 meters), Minaret (10.5 meters), Leaning Red Tower (18 meters tall and 7.5 to 8 meters wide) and the Tower of Babel (22 meters tall, 11 meters wide).

The Gothic Cathedral has come extraordinary stone ornaments reminding of the architecture of the Gothic cathedrals. The Temple of Venus has huge cave formations made of pure quartz, and in the centre there’s the Cave Venus, a 3 meters tall stalagmite in shape of a woman.
