sremski karlovci

Karlovci is a town not far away from Novi Sad, on the slopes of Fruska Gora mountain. By its architecture, it’s a typical Austro - Hungarian town. Numerous cultural and historical monuments and nearness of Strazilovo, one of the most beautiful picnic places in Fruska Gora mountain, make Karlovci as very interesting destination.

history

When in1699 the famous Karlovci’s peace treaty was concluded, this town became more significant. The first Serbian Grammar School was founded here in 1791.

One of the greatest Serbian poets, Branko Radicevic (1824-1853) had lived in Karlovci from his 11th to 17th and attended the school there. Architectural monuments are beautiful examples of style and arts.

getting there

Karlovci is located on the 17th kilometer of the road from Novi Sad to Belgrade. It can be reached by car or by buses number 61 or 62 departing from the center of Novi Sad (near the fish market). Of course, you can get here by any train running between Belgrade and Novi Sad, except for business lines which don’t stop here.

things to see

The Orthodox Cathedral, built between 1758 and 1762 in baroque style, with its Renaissance facade made in 1909 hides magnificent works of painters like Kracun, Cesljar, Orfelin and Paja Jovanovic.

The City Hall (1806-1811) is beautiful architectural relic of the Empire Style. The Roman Catholic Church built at the begining of 18th century and reconstructed in 1768 has interesting elements in its diverse architectural complex.

The Patriarch Court (1892-94) was built in neoclassical and neogothical styles. Also, it is very interesting to visit the palace “Ilion” which belonged to Josip Rajacic (nowadays it is museum), the Orthodox Seminary, Stefaneum etc.

On the outskirts of the town, on the place where Austria and Turkey concluded peace treaty, the Chapel of Peace was buit up in 1710 by donations from different countries. It was rebuilt in 1817. The Chapel is made with round base and one square outlet instead of altar. Here, for the first time in history of the world, a round table was used for negotiations.

Very interesting for its style is the fountain “Four Lions” on the square of Branko Radicevic made in 1799.
